It has to do with coming of age—the Information Age. We are transiting from one system (a top-down Industrial Age) designed to function in a certain way, to another (a bottom-up Information Age). For some this change is a very traumatic event.

Yes, the individual Main Street America investor, or the union member, worried by seeing retirement plans disappear into nothing, are painfully aware that they are being abused. The explanation of "why?" is a terribly negative emotional experience, and I apologize that I can't offer a one-paragraph synopsis. Having gone though the emotionalism of a nightly soap opera, talking heads, explanation of the state of the stock market—"there was a disastrous avalanche in Siberia this morning that resulted in a run on sun blockers supplies in Miami (thus touting Sunblock Inc. stock a smart buy) by those worried about global warming"— you might not even want a single paragraph to foregone conclusions, anymore.

Yet, here you are on the Information Highway, looking for answers. You know that the only real answer to what is happening is to read, ask and answer questions, debate with and for yourself. After wading through nearly 3,500 words (the standard size of an article when I started in the magazine business back in the early 60's was 2,000) you may not agreed with my suggested solutions, but, at the least I promise a different spin than simplistic phrases, as I have the luxury of explaining what I think it all means.
